[edit] Summary
[edit] The Series
PROJECT A.L.B.I.A. is a storyline that runs through a majority of an untitled quartology that author Officer 1BDI has been formulating for over nine years. Although all four parts (arguably) relate to the Creatures series, only 2012 is considered a “Creatures story” by the author. The remaining, incomplete segments are posted outside of the Creatures Community at undisclosed locations.
Within the series, Project A.L.B.I.A. is a secretive and controversial venture between a select group of Humans on Earth and virtually the entire population of Sidhe (aka the Shee) on Albia. It is designed to promote the exchange of information between intergalactic populations for the purpose of expanding the knowledge of all parties involved. In other words, everyone is everyone else’s science experiment.
[edit] The Groups
Humans assigned to various aspects of Project A.L.B.I.A. work collectively under the semi-pseudo company CyberLife, a Cambridge-based station that does legitimate work with artificial intelligence but is otherwise a front for the project. Anyone from Earth working officially with the project is known as a H.A.N.D., a term of endearment the Sidhe thought up to stand for something that 1BDI will disclose at a later date. Humans who are completely unaware of the project are collectively referred to as Navens.
There is also a select group of Humans who are aware of the project and, for one reason or another, oppose it with a passion. They are known as the Anti Project A.L.B.I.A. Coalition (APAC) and are largely regarded as a force not to be reckoned with.
[edit] The Basics of PA
Despite the project being stationed in England, the HANDish come from a wide variety of backgrounds and locales. Thanks to portable Warp portals developed by the Sidhe, members of the project can transport themselves to and from the office, or even Albia, within seconds; hence, distance is not an issue.
In the early days of Project A.L.B.I.A., all that was required to join was an invitation following a ridiculously thorough background check. After several members of the coalition against Project A.L.B.I.A managed to wreck things up from within the project, the Warp portals were fortified to only allow Humans whose DNA signature it recognized to activate them. Due to an unforeseen glitch, Humans who have already been recognized by the portals as “friends” cannot be blocked from activating a portal.
(There are, of course, a select handful of Humans who were added to a “ban list” prior to the project’s introduction after a concerned author approached a Sidhe with her own anxieties. ~ Officer 1BDI)
Players of this series are well aware that the game’s main characters are not Sidhe, but Norns, Grendels, and Ettins. Within the realm of this story, these creatures are the sentient and semi-dependant pets of the Sidhe and occasional H.A.N.D. They’re a popular study subject for many of the HANDish, who are fascinated with studying the biology and behaviors of this collection of alien species. They’re also a great source of experimentation for the Sidhe, who love to design new breeds and the occasional freak individual on a regular basis.
Although the creatures can take care of themselves, many of them imprint themselves onto an “owner” during their early childhood, whom they remain loyal to for the remainder of their life span. Virtually all of the creatures are genetically inclined to follow directions given by their Sidhe creators, a safetrap built into them as early as their species’ conceptions, but there are always the occasional stubborn individuals who take a few commands to do so, and others who seem to be completely lacking the gene.
The lifespans of the inhabitants of Albia vary greatly from those of Humans. Norns and Grendels tend to live for four or five Earth years, give or take a few months, while Ettins hardly survive beyond three and a half years. The Sidhe are relatively immortal, and can life for tens of thousands of years.
[edit] PROJECT A.L.B.I.A. and Arcadia
Project A.L.B.I.A. actually exists as a story within The Arcadia Series, and is the story that PF regularly helps Joselyn write (for the purposes of simplicity, Josie is considered the author of 2012).
